7 Person Saunas

7 Person Saunas

7-Person Saunas

A 7-person sauna is at the top end of residential and the entry point of serious commercial. At this capacity, you're looking at large outdoor barrels, full-size cabin saunas, or custom-built sauna rooms — the kind of installation that anchors a backyard, serves a large family with room to spare, or handles the throughput demands of an Airbnb, vacation rental, gym, or wellness studio. Pre-built options at 7 person are limited compared to smaller sizes because this is where most buyers move into custom territory — the room dimensions, bench layout, heater choice, and materials are tailored to the specific space and use case rather than selected from a catalog. That said, several of our outdoor barrel and cabin models scale to 7+ person capacity, and our custom design service handles the rest.

Large Outdoor Barrels

The largest barrel saunas seat 7–8 people. At this length (typically 8–10 feet with a 6–7 foot diameter), the barrel may include a partitioned changing room at the entry end and a full sauna room at the back, or one continuous open interior with extended bench seating on both sides. SaunaLife builds their largest barrel models in thermally treated wood for year-round outdoor durability without chemical preservatives. The barrel form factor remains thermally efficient even at larger sizes — curved walls minimize wasted air volume, and the enclosed shape retains heat well. Assembly is a weekend project with two to three people at this scale.

Cabin Saunas

Cabin saunas offer the most interior flexibility for 7-person use. A rectangular room large enough for seven means you can design multi-tier bench layouts (upper and lower benches on two or three walls), a dedicated area for the heater with a safety railing, and potentially a separate changing room or porch. The Auroom Arti and True North Outdoor Cabin are both available in configurations that accommodate 7+ people — Auroom with sustainably harvested European alder and aspen and a modern architectural design, True North with western red cedar and cold-climate insulation. Dundalk Leisurecraft also builds larger Canadian cedar cabins in this range. For our full selection, browse cabin saunas and luxury saunas.

Custom Builds

At 7 person, custom is the most common path. A custom sauna room lets you match the build to your exact space — whether that's a converted garage bay, a freestanding backyard structure, an addition off the house, or a commercial room in a gym or spa. You control the dimensions, ceiling height, bench layout, window and door placement, wood species, and heater selection. A custom-built 7-person sauna often costs less than a comparably sized pre-built unit because you avoid the premium for factory assembly and shipping a structure of this size (which can require freight delivery).

We carry everything for a complete custom build: sauna wood (western red cedar, Thermory thermowood, hemlock, aspen, alder), glass and wood doors, benches, lighting, vents, vapor barrier, and accessories. Heater Sizing

A 7-person sauna room is typically 350–550 cubic feet. That requires a 10–15 kW electric heater to reach traditional sauna temperatures (170–200°F) within 30–45 minutes. All heaters at this size are 240V — single-phase residential or three-phase commercial. At the higher end of this range, you're approaching the territory where a floor-standing heater (rather than wall-mounted) makes more sense — larger stone capacity means better thermal mass and more steam per water pour. Use our heater sizing calculator to match kW to your room volume, and browse our electric heater selection from Harvia, HUUM, and Saunum. WiFi-controlled heaters are strongly recommended at this size — starting a 10+ kW heater 30–45 minutes ahead from your phone means the sauna is ready when you are, without wasting energy keeping it hot all day.

Wood-burning stoves in the 15+ kW range handle rooms this size and deliver the most intense traditional heat. For a 7-person room, a larger stove with a substantial stone bed provides the thermal mass needed for extended group sessions with frequent löyly pours. Wood-fired stoves require a chimney installation, clearance compliance, and often a local fire code inspection — but they're the go-to for off-grid installations and for sauna purists who want the fire ritual as part of the experience.

Commercial Considerations

A 7-person sauna is a strong fit for small commercial operations. An Airbnb or vacation rental with a 7-person outdoor sauna commands significantly higher nightly rates — it's a marquee amenity that sets a listing apart. A boutique gym, wellness center, or spa can use a 7-person room for group sessions or private bookings. Commercial installations have specific requirements beyond residential: heaters rated for continuous duty cycles, wood species that resist moisture absorption and odor retention (cedar or thermally treated), easy-to-clean benches, ADA compliance (door width, threshold, bench height, maneuvering space), and potentially three-phase electrical and health department permitting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there pre-built 7-person saunas, or do I need to build custom?

Both options exist. The largest barrel and cabin saunas from SaunaLife, Auroom, True North, and Dundalk accommodate 7+ people in their largest configurations. These ship as kits and assemble on-site. Custom builds give you more control over layout and materials, and at this size the cost advantage of building custom becomes significant — you avoid freight shipping for a very large, heavy structure. If you're unsure, start with our custom design service — we can help you evaluate whether a pre-built or custom approach makes more sense for your space and budget.

What electrical service do I need?

A 10–15 kW electric heater requires a 240V dedicated circuit with a 40–60 amp breaker, depending on the exact heater wattage. Your electrical panel needs sufficient spare capacity for this load — if your panel is already near capacity, you may need an electrician to upgrade it. Budget $800–$2,500 for the circuit installation depending on distance from the panel to the sauna and any panel upgrades required. For complete electrical planning, read our Home Sauna Electrical Requirements guide.

How much does it cost to operate a 7-person sauna?

A 10–15 kW electric heater running for a 1-hour session costs approximately $1.50–$2.50 at typical US electricity rates. Daily use adds $45–$75 per month. The per-session cost is higher than a smaller sauna, but the cost per person per session is actually lower when used at or near capacity — a 7-person sauna used by four people costs roughly the same per session as a 4-person sauna used by two. Wood-fired stoves reduce per-session cost if firewood is affordable locally.

What's the foundation requirement for a 7-person outdoor sauna?

A 7-person outdoor sauna weighs 1,000–2,000+ lbs empty, plus stones (100–200 lbs) and occupants (up to 1,400 lbs at capacity). A concrete pad (4-inch minimum thickness, reinforced) or a compacted gravel base with leveling blocks is the standard approach. The pad should extend 6–12 inches beyond the sauna footprint on all sides for drainage and access. Level within 1/4 inch across the full span. Do not install on bare soil (settling and moisture) or on a standard residential deck without engineering verification. Most municipalities treat this as an accessory structure — check local setback requirements and permit thresholds before installing.
