Shop by Heater Type

Electric Sauna Heaters — The most common choice for residential and commercial saunas. Electric heaters heat sauna rocks that radiate warmth into the room, and you pour water over the rocks to create steam (löyly). Available in wall-mounted and floor-standing models from 2kW to 40kW, covering saunas from small closet-sized rooms to large commercial installations. Most residential models run on 240V and require a dedicated circuit — see our sauna electrical code guide for wiring requirements. Browse complete heater packages that include the heater, controller, and stones.

Wood-Burning Sauna Stoves — The traditional choice for outdoor saunas, off-grid cabins, and anyone who wants an authentic Finnish experience. No electricity needed — just load firewood and light it. Wood-burning stoves produce a unique dry heat with a crackling fire ambiance that electric heaters can't replicate. Available with interior feed (load wood from inside the sauna) or thru-wall feed (load from outside). You'll need a chimney kit for installation. See our guide on using a wood-burning heater indoors and our off-grid sauna heater guide.

Infrared Sauna Heater Panels — Carbon fiber or ceramic panels that emit infrared light to heat your body directly, rather than heating the air. Used in infrared and hybrid sauna builds, including DIY conversions. Available in 120V and 240V options ranging from 300W single panels to multi-panel packages. Pair them with a mechanical controller or digital controller. Our infrared panel calculator helps you figure out how many panels you need for your space.

Gas Sauna Heaters — Natural gas and propane-powered heaters from Scandia, designed for commercial saunas and large residential installations where gas is more cost-effective than electric. These deliver 40,000+ BTU of heating power with lower operating costs over time. Available in natural gas and propane configurations. Read our complete gas sauna heater guide.

How to Choose the Right Size Heater

Sauna heaters are sized by kilowatt (kW) rating, and the right size depends on your sauna room's cubic footage. The general rule is 1 kW per 50 cubic feet of sauna space, with adjustments for factors like ceiling height, insulation quality, glass doors or windows, and whether the walls are exposed rock or wood. Under-sizing your heater means longer heat-up times and difficulty reaching target temperatures; over-sizing wastes energy and can overshoot.

Use our Sauna Heater Sizing Calculator to get a precise recommendation based on your room dimensions. For a deeper dive, read our complete heater sizing guide or check the sizing chart for electric, infrared, and wood-burning heaters.

Voltage & Electrical Requirements

120V Plug-In Heaters — Plug into a standard household outlet. Limited to smaller saunas (typically under 150 cu. ft. / 2–3 person). Great for infrared panels and compact electric heaters where running a dedicated circuit isn't practical. See our 120V sauna heater guide.

240V Heaters — The standard for most residential saunas. Requires a dedicated circuit installed by a licensed electrician. Covers the widest range of heater sizes from 4.5kW to 18kW+. Most Harvia, HUUM, and Saunum residential models run on 240V single-phase.

208V Commercial Heaters — Designed for commercial buildings that run on 208V three-phase power. If you're outfitting a gym, spa, or hotel sauna, these are what you need.

Mounting & Control Options

Wall-Mounted Heaters save floor space and are the most popular choice for residential saunas. Models like the Harvia KIP and HUUM Drop mount directly to the wall at bench height. Floor-Standing Heaters like the Harvia Cilindro and Club series hold more rocks for bigger steam output and are ideal for larger saunas.

For controls, you can choose heaters with built-in knob controls (simple, no wiring for a separate controller), external digital controllers (mount outside the sauna for precise temperature and timer settings), or WiFi-enabled controllers that let you preheat your sauna from your phone. Harvia uses the MyHarvia app and HUUM uses the HUUM app.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size sauna heater do I need?

The general guideline is 1 kW per 50 cubic feet of sauna space. A typical 4' x 6' x 7' home sauna (168 cu. ft.) needs roughly a 4.5kW heater. Factors like glass doors, uninsulated surfaces, and high ceilings mean you may need to size up. Use our heater sizing calculator for an exact recommendation.

Can I plug a sauna heater into a regular outlet?

Only 120V heaters designed for it. These are limited to small saunas under about 150 cubic feet. Most residential sauna heaters are 240V and require a dedicated hardwired circuit installed by a licensed electrician. See our 120V heater guide for plug-in options.

What's the difference between electric and wood-burning sauna heaters?

Electric heaters are easier to install, offer precise temperature control, and work with timers and WiFi apps. Wood-burning stoves require no electricity, produce a distinctive heat quality, and are the go-to for outdoor and off-grid saunas. Both heat sauna rocks for steam. Read our full electric vs. wood-burning comparison.

How do I choose between Harvia and HUUM?

Harvia offers the widest product range with models at every price point. HUUM is known for modern Scandinavian design and a user-friendly app. Both are excellent quality. Our HUUM vs. Harvia comparison breaks down every difference, and we also have model-specific matchups like Harvia Spirit vs. HUUM Drop.

Do I need a GFCI breaker for my sauna heater?

It depends on your local code and installation. Some jurisdictions require GFCI protection for sauna circuits, others don't. Our GFCI requirements guide covers the rules state by state, and our electrical code guide covers the full NEC requirements.

How long do sauna heaters last?

A quality electric sauna heater typically lasts 10–20 years with proper care. Heating elements are the most common wear item and can be replaced individually without buying a whole new heater. Our guide on signs your heater is failing covers when it's time to repair vs. replace, and our heater maintenance guide helps you extend its life.
