Sauna Lighting — LED Strips, Recessed Lights, Wall Lights & More

Standard household light fixtures can't handle the heat and humidity inside a sauna — they'll fail, fog up, or become a safety hazard. Every light on this page is designed and rated for sauna environments, with heat-resistant housings, sealed electronics, and IP67 (or higher) moisture protection that holds up at temperatures well above 150°F.

We carry LED strip lights, recessed spotlights, wall-mounted fixtures, valance lights, chromatherapy color lighting, and dimmer switches from ProSaunas, Bathology, Harvia, HUUM, SaunaLife, Scandia, and Hotass Saunas. Free shipping on every order.

Types of Sauna Lights

LED strip lights — The most popular option for modern sauna builds. Flexible LED strips mount behind backrests, under benches, along ceiling valances, or around the room perimeter to create soft, indirect ambient lighting. Strips from ProSaunas and Harvia are IP67-rated and engineered for sustained high-heat operation. Available in 10', 16', and 16.4' lengths. LED strips produce the clean, "dotless" indirect glow you see in most high-end sauna photos.

Recessed spotlights — Flush-mount into the ceiling or wall for a clean, built-in look with no exposed fixtures. The Scandia 3" aimable LED recessed light and Bathology Spectrum 441D dimmable 2" spotlights are designed specifically for sauna ceilings — heat-rated junction boxes, dimmable output, and warm white (3000K) color temperature. Best for builds where you want focused, adjustable task lighting or a polished commercial aesthetic.

Wall-mounted lights — Traditional sauna light fixtures that mount on the wall surface. The Scandia oval wall light is a classic heat-resistant, shatterproof sauna fixture that accepts standard bulbs up to 60W (or LED equivalent). The Diablo wall mount is a vapor-proof option with a modern look. The HUUM OVO is a designer LED wall light that casts a soft glow from behind a wooden panel — pairs beautifully with HUUM heaters for a cohesive Scandinavian look.

Valance lights — The Hotass Saunas LED valance light (available in 4' and 8' lengths) is designed to mount inside a valance above the bench, casting indirect light upward or downward. Creates a dramatic lighting effect without any visible fixture.

Chromatherapy (color) lighting — SaunaLife's EMood chromatherapy LED bars cycle through the full RGB color spectrum, controlled via WiFi from your phone. IP67-rated for sauna use. Mount under benches or behind backrests to add color therapy to your sauna sessions. Available in 48" and 65/76" lengths. Chromatherapy adds a spa-like visual experience and many users find specific colors enhance relaxation.

Dimmer switches — The Bathology Spectrum 442 dimmer switch is purpose-built for sauna LED lighting. It lets you dial brightness from full output down to a subtle glow — most people prefer dimmer lighting during their sauna session. Compatible with Bathology spotlight kits and most low-voltage LED sauna lights.

Specialty Lighting

Himalayan salt wall panels with LED backlighting — Scandia's salt panels combine the warm amber glow of backlit Himalayan salt with the purported air quality benefits of salt therapy. Creates a dramatic visual focal point in any sauna.

Heater-integrated LED lighting — Harvia makes embedding flanges and safety railings with built-in LED lighting for their Cilindro heater series. These illuminate the area around the heater and highlight the sauna rocks, adding ambient light right where the visual action is.

Red light therapy panels — While not traditional "lighting," sauna-rated red light therapy panels serve a dual purpose: they emit therapeutic red and near-infrared wavelengths for cellular-level health benefits while also casting a warm red glow inside the sauna. See our sauna-rated red light panels collection.

Planning Your Sauna Lighting

Most custom sauna builds use a combination of light types — for example, LED strips behind the backrest and under the bench for ambient lighting, plus one or two recessed ceiling spotlights for task lighting when you need it (like when pouring water on the rocks). Here are some common approaches:

Minimal/ambient only: A single LED strip behind the backrest or under the upper bench. This is the simplest setup and gives you the soft indirect glow that defines modern sauna aesthetics. One strip and a power supply — that's it.

Full ambient: LED strips behind backrests and under both upper and lower benches, creating layered indirect lighting from multiple angles. ProSaunas' dual 10' strip kit or Bathology's Spectrum 360 kit are designed for this approach.

Ambient + task: LED strips for ambiance combined with one or two dimmable recessed ceiling lights for when you need actual visibility. Dim the ceiling lights during sessions, turn them up for cleaning and maintenance.

Chromatherapy: SaunaLife color bars under the bench or behind the backrest, cycling through colors during your session. Can be combined with white LED strips for functional lighting when you need it.

Wire your lighting during construction — it's much easier to run low-voltage wiring before walls are finished. Use waterproof electrical boxes for all connections inside the sauna. Our A–Z Custom Sauna Room Guide covers lighting wiring as part of the full build process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use regular LED lights in my sauna?

No. Standard LED bulbs and strips are rated for room-temperature operation (typically up to 104°F/40°C). Sauna temperatures of 150–200°F will drastically shorten their lifespan, cause flickering, color shifting, or outright failure. The lights in this collection are specifically engineered for sustained high-heat, high-humidity operation with heat-resistant components and sealed housings.

What about battery-powered sauna lights?

Battery-powered LED lanterns and rechargeable sauna lights can work as a supplemental light source, especially for off-grid saunas and wood-fired builds without electrical wiring. They're useful for portable setups and sauna tents. However, for permanent sauna builds, hardwired LED lighting provides much better output, reliability, and control (including dimming and chromatherapy options). If you need lighting for a non-electric sauna, our guide on lighting options for non-electric saunas covers alternatives in detail.

Where should I mount LED strips?

The most common placement is behind the backrest (creates a soft glow on the wall behind you) and under the upper bench (illuminates the lower bench and floor). These positions keep the light source hidden from direct view while producing even, indirect ambient lighting. Avoid mounting strips where they'll be in direct contact with water splashing from the löyly (water on rocks).

Do I need a dimmer?

Strongly recommended. Most sauna users prefer lower lighting during sessions for a more relaxing atmosphere. A dimmer lets you turn lights up for cleaning and maintenance and down for the actual sauna session. The Bathology dimmer switch is designed specifically for sauna LED systems. Some lights, like the SaunaLife chromatherapy bars, have brightness control built into their WiFi app.

What color temperature is best for a sauna?

Warm white (2700K–3000K) is the standard choice for saunas. It complements the natural tones of cedar, alder, aspen, and other sauna woods and creates a relaxing, spa-like atmosphere. Cool white (4000K+) tends to feel clinical and isn't typically used in saunas. The recessed lights and strips in this collection use warm white LEDs.

Can I control sauna lights with my heater controller?

Some heater controllers — like the HUUM UKU and Harvia Xenio — have a dedicated lighting output that can switch sauna lights on and off (and in some cases dim them). The HUUM OVO light is specifically designed to work with the UKU controller. Check your heater controller's specs to see if it supports a lighting output.
