Important Notes
- • These calculations include a 10% waste factor for cutting, defects, and mistakes.
- • For tongue and groove cladding, we've used the actual coverage width per board in calculations.
- • Bench slat counts use a slat-by-slat method — each slat must span the full bench length.
- • Bench frame estimates include two long rails, cross supports every ~20", and legs every ~24".
- • Actual material needs may vary based on specific design details and construction methods.
- • Always purchase extra material to account for unexpected needs or future repairs.

This calculator provides an estimate of materials needed for your custom sauna project. It calculates the quantity of wood boards required for wall/ceiling cladding and bench construction based on your specific dimensions and wood selections.
How Calculations Work:
Cladding: Walls and ceiling are calculated surface-by-surface. For each surface, we determine the number of horizontal cladding rows (height ÷ board coverage width, rounded up), then compute total linear inches of boards needed. Because tongue-and-groove boards can be joined end-to-end with staggered joints, offcuts from one row can be reused in the next.
Bench tops: Each bench is calculated slat-by-slat. We determine how many slats fit across the bench depth (accounting for gaps between slats), then how many boards each slat requires based on bench length vs. board length. This prevents underestimation when bench length exceeds board length.
Bench frames: Estimated based on two long rails, cross supports spaced approximately every 20 inches, and legs spaced approximately every 24 inches.
Wood Specifications Used:
