Residential Sauna Heaters

Residential Sauna Heaters

Residential Sauna Heaters

Residential sauna heaters are designed for home saunas — basement rooms, backyard sauna kits, converted closets, and DIY builds. They run on standard household electrical service (120V or 240V single-phase), fit inside smaller rooms, and come in a wide range of styles from compact wall-mounted units to sculptural floor-standing centerpieces. Every heater in this collection is rated for residential use and compatible with standard home electrical panels.

We carry residential electric heaters from three manufacturers: Harvia (Finland's largest, widest model range), HUUM (Estonian, design-forward), and Saunum (patented Climate Equalizer technology). Each brand takes a different approach to heating, stone capacity, control systems, and aesthetics — which means the "best" residential heater depends entirely on your room size, installation constraints, and how you want your sauna to look and feel.

Not sure where to start? Use our Sauna Heater Sizing Calculator to find the right kW rating for your room, or read our model-by-model guides: Harvia Electric Heaters: Which Model Is Right for You? and HUUM Electric Heaters: Which Model Is Right for You?.

120V vs. 240V: Know Before You Buy

This is the first decision because it determines which heaters you can install. 120V plug-in heaters (1.7–3.5kW) use a standard household outlet — no electrician required. They heat small saunas up to roughly 175 cubic feet (a compact 2-person room). The tradeoff is lower power, which means longer heat-up times and a lower maximum temperature in larger spaces. 240V hardwired heaters (3–11kW) require a dedicated circuit installed by a licensed electrician, similar to an electric dryer or oven hookup. They heat rooms from approximately 100 to 600+ cubic feet with significantly faster heat-up and higher sustained temperatures. Most home sauna builders choose 240V because even a modest 4×6-foot room benefits from the faster heating and stronger löyly (steam from water on stones).

Harvia — Widest Selection, Most Popular

Harvia manufactures more sauna heaters than anyone else and offers the broadest residential lineup. Every Harvia model is available as a standalone heater or as a complete package with controller, stones, and WiFi included.

KIP (4.5–8kW) — Harvia's most popular home sauna heater. Compact wall-mounted design with a small footprint that works in almost any room layout. Available with built-in knob controls for simplicity or an external Xenio digital controller with WiFi for app control through MyHarvia. Also available in black steel for a modern finish. The KIP is the go-to recommendation for first-time sauna builders because it's affordable, reliable, and fits the widest range of room sizes. For a detailed comparison of the two most common residential models, see our KIP vs. Spirit guide.

The Wall (6–8kW) — A sleek, flat-profile wall-mounted heater designed to minimize protrusion into the room. Built-in controls with no external panel required. Available in stainless steel or black steel. Ideal for saunas where floor space and bench clearance are tight — the slim profile keeps the heater close to the wall.

Spirit (6–8kW) — A curved, organic design that wraps stones in a rounded mesh cage for maximum stone exposure. Produces exceptionally soft, even heat and generous steam because water cascades across a large stone surface. Pairs with the Xenio digital controller with WiFi. The Spirit is for sauna enthusiasts who prioritize steam quality and want the heater itself to be a design element. Read our Spirit vs. HUUM DROP comparison to see how these two popular design-forward heaters compare.

Vega Compact (1.7–3.5kW, 120V & 240V) — The only Harvia heater available in 120V plug-in configuration. Designed for small saunas up to 175 cubic feet. Built-in dial controls, compact wall-mount design. The Vega Compact is the simplest path to a home sauna — plug it in, turn the dial, and you're heating. Also available in 240V for faster heating in the same small room sizes.

Cilindro Half (6–11kW) — A pillar-style heater with an open outer casing that exposes a large stone surface. The Cilindro holds substantially more stones than comparably rated wall-mounted heaters, which produces softer heat and better steam. Available with built-in controls (6–9kW) or external Xenio WiFi controller (6–11kW). Side-wall or corner installation with a small floor footprint. The Cilindro makes a visual statement — it's part heater, part sculptural stone column.

Virta (6–10.5kW) — A floor-standing heater encased in stainless steel that holds 100–150 lbs of stones. The Virta separates heating elements from stones for longer element life and easy maintenance. Pairs with Xenio digital controller with WiFi. The largest residential Virta models (9–10.5kW) heat rooms up to 500+ cubic feet, making it a crossover option for large home saunas.

Virta Combi (6–10.5kW) — Combines a traditional electric heater with a built-in steam generator. One unit produces both dry sauna heat and steam — no separate steam generator needed. You can run dry, steam, or a blend of both. The Combi is the only residential heater in this collection that generates true steam independently (without pouring water on stones). Add essential oils to the steam generator's aroma cup for an integrated aromatherapy experience.

HUUM — Design-Forward, Sculptural

HUUM heaters are designed in Estonia with a focus on minimalist aesthetics and large stone capacity relative to their size. Every HUUM residential heater pairs with the UKU controller, available in WiFi (app control) or non-WiFi versions.

DROP (4.5–9kW) — Shaped like a water drop, the DROP is HUUM's most recognizable design. Wall-mounted with a distinctive organic silhouette. Excellent stone-to-kW ratio produces soft, even heat. The DROP is the most direct competitor to the Harvia Spirit — both prioritize aesthetics and steam quality over raw simplicity. HIVE & HIVE Mini (6–18kW / 6–9kW) — Cylindrical open-frame heaters that hold an enormous volume of stones. The HIVE is a sculptural stone tower — more stones mean softer heat and longer-lasting steam between water pours. The Mini offers the same design in a more compact format. CLIFF & CLIFF Mini (6–10.5kW / 3.5kW) — Slim wall-mounted heaters designed for tight spaces. The CLIFF tucks close to the wall with minimal protrusion — comparable to Harvia's The Wall in concept but with HUUM's stone-forward design philosophy. The CLIFF Mini at 3.5kW is one of the few compact options for smaller saunas. STEEL & STEEL Mini (6–10.5kW / 3.5kW) — Wall-mounted with a clean stainless steel enclosure. The most understated HUUM design — minimal, industrial, and lets the sauna room itself be the focus. CORE (6–10.5kW) — Floor-standing with an integrated stone basket. Comparable in concept to the Harvia Virta but with HUUM's aesthetic sensibility.

Saunum — Climate Equalizer Technology

Saunum heaters include a patented Climate Equalizer that circulates air through the stone chamber and distributes heat more evenly throughout the room. In a standard sauna, the temperature near the ceiling can be 40–60°F hotter than at floor level. The Climate Equalizer reduces this gradient, creating more uniform temperature from floor to bench. WiFi control is built into every Saunum heater.

Saunum Air — Wall-mounted, compact form factor with Climate Equalizer. Saunum Air L — Larger version with more stone capacity. Saunum Air Perfect — Premium model with the most advanced Climate Equalizer configuration for the most even temperature distribution.

How to Choose Your Residential Heater

Small saunas (1–2 person, under 175 cu. ft.) — Harvia Vega Compact (120V plug-in for no-electrician simplicity) or HUUM CLIFF Mini / STEEL Mini (3.5kW, 240V). Mid-size saunas (2–4 person, 175–350 cu. ft.) — Harvia KIP 4.5–6kW (best value), HUUM DROP 4.5–6kW (best design), or Saunum Air (best temperature uniformity). Large home saunas (4–6 person, 350–600 cu. ft.) — Harvia Cilindro Half 9–11kW or Virta 9–10.5kW, HUUM HIVE 9–18kW, or Saunum Air Perfect. These rooms benefit from floor-standing or pillar heaters with larger stone capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between residential and commercial heaters?

Residential heaters run on standard home electrical service (120V or 240V single-phase) and are designed for intermittent use — a few sessions per day, not 24-hour continuous operation. Commercial heaters support 208V three-phase power, use heavier-gauge elements rated for all-day operation, and start at higher kW ratings. If your sauna is in your home and used by your household, residential heaters are the right choice.

Do I need an electrician to install a sauna heater?

For 240V heaters, yes — they require a dedicated circuit hardwired by a licensed electrician, similar to installing an electric dryer or oven. For 120V heaters (Harvia Vega Compact 1.7–3.5kW), no electrician is needed — they plug into a standard household outlet. Regardless of voltage, all heaters require proper clearances from walls, ceilings, and benches as specified in the installation manual.

Should I get built-in controls or WiFi?

Built-in knob controls (available on the KIP, The Wall, Vega Compact, and Cilindro Half) are the simplest option — walk into the sauna, turn the dial, done. WiFi controllers (Harvia Xenio with MyHarvia app, HUUM UKU WiFi, Saunum built-in WiFi) let you preheat the sauna from your phone so it's ready when you are. This eliminates the 30–45 minute wait for the sauna to heat up, which many owners find dramatically increases how often they actually use the sauna. For heaters that don't include a controller, browse our heater packages that bundle the heater, controller, WiFi, and stones together.

How many stones do I need?

Each heater specifies its stone capacity, and the required stones are included when you purchase a heater package or sold separately. More stones means softer heat and better steam quality — heaters like the Cilindro Half, HUUM HIVE, and Harvia Virta hold substantially more stones than compact wall-mounted models, which is why many sauna enthusiasts prefer them despite the larger footprint. For decorative stone options that upgrade the look of any heater, browse our selection of polished and specialty stones.
