Where to Buy a Sauna Online: 12 Things to Check Before You Order (2026)

Buying a sauna online is now the normal way most people get one. There are very few sauna showrooms, the selection online is far bigger, and most major brands ship straight from their own warehouses. But a sauna is not a pair of shoes. It weighs hundreds of pounds, arrives on a freight truck, often needs an electrician, and costs anywhere from about $2,000 to well over $15,000.

That means "where should I buy it?" matters almost as much as "which sauna should I buy?" The same model can cost you very different amounts, come with very different support, and be a very different experience depending on the store you order from.

Below are the 12 things we would check before ordering a sauna from any online retailer, including us. There is a printable checklist table near the end, plus an honest look at how Haven of Heat measures up.

1. Is the store an authorized dealer for that brand?

This is the single most important check, and the one most shoppers skip. Sauna manufacturers typically honor their warranty only for products bought through authorized dealers. If you buy from an unauthorized seller, a marketplace reseller, or a "too good to be true" listing, you may discover the warranty does not apply when a heater element fails or a panel cracks.

How to check:

  • Look for a dealer locator or "where to buy" page on the manufacturer's own website, or call the brand and ask whether the store is authorized.
  • Ask the retailer directly. A legitimate dealer will say yes without hesitation and will know the brand's warranty terms.
  • Be cautious with listings that show prices far below what every other store charges (see the next point on MAP pricing). That is often a sign of an unauthorized or gray-market seller.

Warranty lengths vary by brand and component. For example, the Dundalk Leisurecraft Canadian Timber Harmony barrel sauna lists a 5-year warranty, and many Dynamic infrared saunas list a 5-year limited warranty. Whatever the number, it is only worth something if the brand recognizes where you bought it.

2. Why are sauna prices the same everywhere? (MAP pricing)

If you compare the same sauna across several sites and see nearly identical prices, you are not imagining it. Most sauna brands set a Minimum Advertised Price (MAP). Authorized dealers agree not to advertise below that price, which is why the sticker price rarely differs much from store to store.

What that means for you:

  • The sticker price is not where you save. The real differences are in freight charges, sales tax, what is included, and the support you get.
  • Brand-wide sales are usually brand-wide. When a manufacturer runs a promotion, authorized dealers generally all get it at the same time.
  • A price match or "lowest price guarantee" is worth asking about, but read what it actually covers. Some stores only match authorized dealers, some exclude freight, and some have no written terms at all. The easiest move is to ask the store before you order: "If I find this lower from an authorized dealer, what will you do?"

3. What is the true landed cost?

Because advertised prices are so similar, the number that actually matters is the landed cost: the total you pay to get the sauna to your driveway. Check it on the final checkout screen, not the product page.

  • Freight. Large outdoor saunas ship by LTL freight truck. Many online retailers add freight at checkout, and on barrel and cube saunas it is common to see several hundred dollars and sometimes close to $1,000. Some stores include freight on most orders.
  • Sales tax. Depending on where the store collects tax, this can add hundreds of dollars on a $6,000 to $9,000 sauna.
  • Required add-ons. If the heater, controller, or stones are sold separately (see point 7), add them in before you compare.
  • Delivery upgrades. Liftgate, residential, or appointment fees sometimes appear as separate lines.

For a full breakdown of what saunas really cost beyond the box, see our 2026 sauna pricing guide.

4. How will it be delivered?

Almost every full-size sauna arrives the same way: on a pallet, by freight truck, to the curb. "Curbside" means the driver brings it to the end of the truck, not into your backyard, garage, or basement. Plan for that before the truck shows up.

  • Box weights. Check the product listing. A 2-person indoor infrared sauna like the Dynamic San Marino ships in 2 boxes (about 178 lbs and 145 lbs). An outdoor kit like the Golden Designs Klosters lists a 715-795 lb shipping weight across 3 boxes on a pallet. Have two or more strong helpers or a pallet jack ready.
  • Liftgate vs. forklift or crane. Boxed kits usually come off with a liftgate. Pre-assembled cabins and oversized units often cannot, and need a forklift, telehandler, or crane at your end. Ask the store which applies before you order. Our guide on renting a crane or forklift for unloading large saunas covers the options.
  • Truck access. A full-size freight truck needs room to stop and unload. Narrow, steep, or gated roads can require a smaller truck or a different drop point.

Inspect before you sign

When the freight arrives, inspect every box before the driver leaves. Look for crushed corners, punctures, broken pallets, or wet cardboard. If anything looks off, write a specific note on the Bill of Lading (BOL), such as "Box 2 corner crushed, possible damage," take photos, and then sign. A clean signature with no notes makes a freight damage claim much harder. Contact the store the same day.

5. Is the stock and lead time transparent?

A product page that just says "In stock" tells you very little. Some saunas ship from a U.S. warehouse within a few business days; others are built to order and take weeks. The Dundalk Harmony, for example, is listed as custom-made-to-order in Canada and non-cancellable once ordered, while the Dynamic infrared models above list shipping from a California warehouse in 1-3 business days.

Good questions to ask:

  • Does this ship from stock or is it made to order?
  • What is the realistic delivery window to my ZIP code?
  • Can it be cancelled once ordered?
  • Will you tell me if the date slips?

6. Does the store check your electrical before you buy?

This is where a lot of online sauna purchases go wrong. Saunas fall into two broad groups:

  • 120V plug-in. Many small infrared saunas plug into a standard outlet. The Dynamic models above, for instance, call for a 120V/15 amp non-GFCI outlet (dedicated is best).
  • 240V hardwired. Most traditional saunas and outdoor barrels need a dedicated 240V circuit installed by an electrician. The Harvia 8kW heater in the Golden Designs Klosters is listed at 240V/33.4 amps, and a 6kW Harvia KIP package draws 25 amps at 240V and needs 8 gauge wiring on a dedicated 35 amp circuit.

A good retailer will ask what electrical you have and steer you toward something that fits, instead of letting you find out after delivery. Read our sauna electrical requirements guide before you order, and if you want to avoid an electrician entirely, see saunas that don't require an electrician.

7. What is actually included (and what is required to operate)?

Two saunas at the same price can be very different deals depending on what comes in the box. With traditional saunas especially, the heater, controller, and stones are often sold separately.

Look for wording like "required to operate," "sold separately," or "heater not included." Also check whether sauna stones come with the heater, since electric heaters need a full load of stones to work properly and some ship without them.

Should you buy the heater from the same store?

Usually, yes. Buying the sauna and heater together means one order, one point of contact, and someone who has already checked that the heater kW matches the room size. If you buy elsewhere, confirm the heater is correctly sized (our heater size calculator helps) and that the wiring matches.

8. Financing and HSA/FSA options

Since prices are similar across authorized dealers, payment options can be a real differentiator. Check:

  • Whether 0% APR promotional financing is offered, and for how long.
  • The maximum financed amount (some programs cap out below the price of a larger outdoor sauna).
  • Whether the store works with an HSA/FSA program. Saunas are not automatically eligible; qualifying usually requires a Letter of Medical Necessity for a qualifying condition.

9. Read the return policy (especially for freight items)

Returns on saunas are not like returns on small items. Before you order, find out:

  • Whether the model is returnable at all. Made-to-order and custom saunas are often non-cancellable and non-returnable.
  • Whether there is a restocking fee, and how large it is. Fees of a meaningful percentage of the price are common on freight items.
  • Who pays return freight. On a 700 lb sauna, return shipping alone can be significant.
  • How damage is handled versus a change of mind. Damage reported correctly at delivery (see point 4) is usually handled as a replacement part or claim, not a return.

10. Can you reach a real expert, including on weekends?

Most people shop and assemble on weekends. That is exactly when many online stores have no one answering the phone. Before you buy, test it: call, text, or chat with a specific question, like "Will this heater work on my 30 amp circuit?" or "Can a liftgate unload this model?" How quickly and how accurately they answer tells you a lot about what support will look like after the sale.

11. Is installation help available?

Even "DIY-friendly" saunas take work. The Klosters is listed at about 4 hours for 2 people, and the Dynamic 2-person infrared saunas at about 1 hour for 2 people. Larger outdoor saunas also need a level foundation and often an electrician. Ask whether the store can connect you with assemblers or electricians in your area, and budget for it. Our guide to the typical cost to have a sauna installed breaks down the numbers.

12. Are the reviews from verified buyers, with real photos?

Reviews are useful, but only if they are real. Look for:

  • "Verified buyer" labels tied to actual orders.
  • Customer photos of the sauna installed in real backyards and basements, not just studio images.
  • Reviews that mention delivery, assembly, and support, not just "love it."
  • Some negative or mixed reviews. A wall of only 5-star reviews with no detail is a yellow flag.

Check reviews of the brand and of the store separately.

FAQ

Is it safe to buy a sauna online?

Yes, if you buy from an authorized dealer. That protects your manufacturer warranty, and a reputable dealer will help you sort out delivery, electrical, and any damage claims. The risk comes mainly from unauthorized sellers and listings priced far below every other store.

Why are sauna prices the same everywhere?

Most brands set a Minimum Advertised Price (MAP) that authorized dealers agree not to advertise below. The real differences between stores show up in freight, sales tax, included components, financing, and support.

Who pays for freight?

It depends on the store. Many online retailers add freight at checkout, often several hundred dollars on large outdoor saunas. Others, including Haven of Heat on most contiguous U.S. orders, include it. Always compare the final checkout total.

What if my sauna arrives damaged?

Inspect every box before the driver leaves, note any damage specifically on the Bill of Lading, take photos, and contact the store the same day. Most freight damage is resolved with replacement parts once it is properly documented.

Can I use HSA/FSA funds to buy a sauna?

Sometimes. Saunas are not automatically eligible, but customers with a qualifying medical need may be able to use HSA/FSA funds with a Letter of Medical Necessity. Haven of Heat offers this through Truemed for qualifying customers.

Should I buy the heater from the same store?

Usually, yes. It keeps everything on one order, makes support simpler, and lets the store confirm the heater is correctly sized and matches your electrical before anything ships.

Bottom line

The best place to buy a sauna online is an authorized dealer that shows you the full landed cost up front, tells you exactly how it will be delivered and what is included, checks your electrical before you order, and answers the phone when you need it, including on Saturday. Use the checklist above with any store you are considering.
