There are electric sauna heaters that heat a room, and then there are electric sauna heaters that become the room. The HUUM Drop is firmly in the second category. Shaped like a falling water droplet, built from brushed stainless steel, and loaded with up to 122 pounds of volcanic stones, the Drop is the most visually distinctive wall-mounted sauna heater on the market — and it backs up that design with genuine performance.
In this review, we break down everything you need to know about the HUUM Drop: how it heats, how it steams, which model fits your sauna, what it takes to install, and whether it's worth the premium over more conventional heaters. We've sold thousands of these through our HUUM lineup and know this heater inside and out.

What Is the HUUM Drop?
The HUUM Drop is a wall-mounted electric sauna heater designed and manufactured in Tallinn, Estonia by HUUM — a company founded by Siim Nellis, a third-generation sauna stove builder. HUUM launched the Drop in 2013, and it immediately stood apart from the boxy stainless-steel heaters that dominated the market. The design took its shape from a single drop of water: a rounded, tapered form that softens the angular cedar interior of a traditional sauna room rather than fighting against it.
That design earned the Drop a prestigious Red Dot Product Design Award — one of the most respected industrial design honors in the world — and the heater remains one of HUUM's top sellers globally more than a decade later. It's available in four power ratings (4.5, 6, 7.5, and 9 kW) covering sauna rooms from roughly 106 to 530 cubic feet, making it suitable for most residential and small commercial applications.

Design and Build Quality
The Drop's silhouette is genuinely unlike anything else in the electric sauna heater category. Where most wall-mounted heaters are rectangular boxes with a mesh cage, the Drop tapers from a wide stone-holding basket at the top into a narrower base — a form that mirrors the outline of a droplet of water suspended in air. It's a heater that reads as art, not appliance.
Construction is all stainless steel, and HUUM is deliberate about the ratio of metal to stone. The cage uses minimal material specifically so that heat radiates from the rocks rather than the metal body. This matters: metal heats rapidly and cools rapidly, producing harsh, dry heat and short-lived steam. Stones store thermal energy and release it slowly, creating the soft, consistent löyly that Finnish sauna culture is built around. The Drop's open-frame design maximizes airflow through the stone bed for exactly this effect.
One of the Drop's most flexible design features is its bench-embedding option. Rather than sitting exposed on the wall, the heater can be recessed into the sauna bench, with at least 14.8 inches of the unit protruding above the bench surface. An optional embedding flange covers the cut rim for a clean, built-in finish. The result looks like the heater grew there — it's one of the best-looking installation options available for an electric heater.
Stone Capacity and Steam Quality
The Drop's 122-lb stone capacity is its biggest functional differentiator. Most wall-mounted electric sauna heaters carry between 20 and 55 pounds of stones. The Drop carries more than twice that — a volume that rivals or exceeds many wood-burning stoves. Why does this matter?
More stones means more thermal mass. A larger stone bed stores more heat energy, which translates into steam that lasts longer after each ladle of water, less temperature recovery time between rounds of löyly, and a softer, more enveloping heat rather than the sharp, dry heat you get from a small stone bed. With the Drop, you can keep pouring water on the stones continuously until the room fills with steam. With most wall-mounted heaters, a single ladle requires a pause while the elements recover.
HUUM ships the Drop with olivine diabase stones — rounded, 2–4 inch volcanic rocks with high heat capacity and excellent durability. These are not decorative stones; they're purpose-built sauna rocks with a low silica content that resists cracking under repeated thermal stress. For best results, replace the stone bed every three to five years depending on frequency of use.

Performance: Heat-Up Time and Max Temperature
The HUUM Drop reaches a maximum temperature of 230°F (110°C), which is on the higher end of what wall-mounted electric heaters deliver. Reaching that peak takes time — expect 60 to 90 minutes depending on room size, insulation quality, and which kW model you're running. The large stone mass that makes the steam so impressive is also the reason heat-up takes longer than lighter, lower-capacity heaters.
This is where the UKU Wi-Fi controller becomes more than a convenience feature — it's effectively a necessity for a heater with this heat-up profile. With Wi-Fi control and the HUUM mobile app, you start the heater before you leave the gym, the office, or wherever you are, and walk into a sauna that's already at temperature. The app allows full remote control of temperature settings, a 1–12 hour session timer, and real-time status monitoring from iOS or Android. If you're buying the Drop, budget for the UKU Wi-Fi package — it transforms the longer heat-up time from a limitation into a non-issue.
HUUM Drop Model Comparison: Which Size Do You Need?
Choosing the right kW rating is the most important decision you'll make when buying the Drop. All four models share the same body dimensions (15.4"W × 13.2"D × 23.3"H), the same 122-lb stone capacity, and the same stainless steel build. The difference is output power and the sauna room volumes they're rated for. Use the table below alongside our sauna heater sizing calculator to confirm the right fit for your room.

All models: 240V/1PH, 15.4"W × 13.2"D × 23.3"H (heater weight: 24 lbs). Room coverage figures are for standard insulated saunas. Add adjusted cubic footage for cold surfaces like tile, glass, and stone. When in doubt, size up.
A quick rule of thumb: if your sauna has a lot of glass, tile floors, or natural stone walls, these cold surfaces absorb heat and effectively increase the room's thermal load. Our sizing calculator accounts for this. Undersizing the Drop means your elements work harder and take longer to reach temperature. Oversizing means your room hits target temperature before the stones are fully charged — and you lose the steam quality advantage that makes the Drop worth buying in the first place. Size it right.

The UKU Control System
The Drop does not include a built-in controller — the heater requires a separate UKU control unit for operation. HUUM offers two configurations:
UKU Local — A wall-mounted digital panel installed outside the sauna room. Set temperature, session duration, and monitor status from the panel. Available with a Classic (black or white plastic), Glass (touchscreen), or Wood (thermo-treated ash) face. This is the right choice for a dedicated sauna with a permanent setup and no need for remote access.
UKU Wi-Fi — Identical in function to UKU Local but adds Wi-Fi connectivity and full app control via the HUUM mobile app (iOS and Android). Remote preheat, programmable weekly schedules, real-time temperature monitoring, and push notifications when your sauna is ready. Given the Drop's 60–90 minute heat-up time, the Wi-Fi version is what most buyers opt for — and what we recommend for anyone who doesn't want to plan sessions a full hour in advance.
The UKU system is sold separately. We carry complete HUUM Drop packages that bundle the heater, UKU Wi-Fi controller, and sauna stones together, which is the cleanest way to buy if you're starting fresh.

Installation Requirements
The Drop is a 240V wall-mounted heater, and like all sauna heaters in this power range, it requires a dedicated circuit installed by a licensed electrician. Here's what your electrician needs to know:
-
Drop 4.5 / Drop 6: 240V/1PH, 30A dedicated circuit, 10 AWG wire
-
Drop 7.5 / Drop 9: 240V/1PH, 40A dedicated circuit, 8 AWG wire
-
Mounting height: Bottom of the wall bracket sits 12.2" above the hard floor
-
Wall thickness: Minimum 3.94" (100mm) for structural mounting — do not hang from cedar paneling alone; anchor to framing
-
Minimum clearances: Follow the installation manual for required distances to benches, walls, and the ceiling
-
Bench embedding: At least 14.8" of the heater must protrude above the bench surface when using the embedded installation option
The Drop ships with the wall-mount bracket, temperature sensor, door sensor, and display panel cables. Stones are included in package purchases. The UKU controller is sold separately or included in a package. If you're unsure about wiring requirements, our team can walk you through the full spec sheet or connect you with a qualified installer.
HUUM's Design Updates: The Element Separator and Upgraded Stones
Earlier versions of the Drop experienced issues with sauna stones degrading over time and settling unevenly, which in some cases allowed heating elements to make contact with each other — causing premature element failure and, in rare cases, overheating. This was a legitimate product concern, and HUUM addressed it directly.
Current Drop models include a heating element retainer (element separator) that physically spaces the elements from each other regardless of how the stone bed shifts over time. HUUM also upgraded the included stones to a higher-grade olivine diabase with better structural integrity and a lower tendency to fracture under repeated heating cycles. These updates, now standard across the lineup, resolved the reliability concerns that some early buyers encountered. Current production models are significantly more robust than units manufactured before 2020.
Additionally, current models include integrated heat shields on larger variants (7.5 kW and 9 kW), which help manage heat distribution and protect the mounting surface.

HUUM Drop vs. Other Heaters in Our Lineup
The Drop competes primarily against other wall-mounted heaters in the $800–$1,500 range. Here's how it stacks up against the most common alternatives:
HUUM Drop vs. Harvia Spirit — The Harvia Spirit is the closest Finnish-made competitor: a well-built, WiFi-compatible wall-mount heater that's similarly priced and also covers a wide range of room sizes. The Spirit carries significantly fewer stones (roughly 33 lbs vs. the Drop's 122 lbs), which means faster heat-up but considerably less steam persistence and thermal mass. The Drop produces a noticeably softer, longer-lasting löyly. The Spirit is the better choice if you prioritize fast heat-up and a more traditional utilitarian aesthetic. Our full Harvia vs. HUUM comparison goes deeper on this.
HUUM Drop vs. HUUM CLIFF — The HUUM CLIFF is HUUM's slim-profile alternative, designed for saunas where wall and bench clearances are tight. The CLIFF can be mounted much closer to walls and benches than the Drop, making it the right pick for compact sauna rooms with limited maneuvering space. The Drop wins on stone capacity and visual impact; the CLIFF wins on installation flexibility in constrained spaces.
HUUM Drop vs. HUUM HIVE Mini — The HIVE Mini is a floor-standing heater. If you have the floor space, a floor-standing unit almost always produces superior steam quality due to even greater stone volume and a more even heat distribution pattern. The Drop is the better choice for wall-mounted builds where floor space is at a premium or where the sauna interior doesn't allow for a floor unit.

Who Should Buy the HUUM Drop?
The Drop is an excellent heater, but it's the right choice for a specific type of buyer. It makes the most sense if:
- You're building or renovating a home sauna and want the heater to serve as a design focal point, not just functional hardware
- Steam quality matters to you — you want the ability to pour repeatedly without waiting for recovery
- Your sauna is between 106 and 530 cubic feet (the Drop's full coverage range)
- You're comfortable with a 60–90 minute heat-up time, ideally managed via the UKU Wi-Fi app
- You want a heater from a brand with clear European engineering heritage and a track record of post-purchase support
It's probably not the best choice if you want a heater with immediate, on-demand heat-up (look at the Harvia KIP or Spirit with smaller stone loads), if you have a very tight wall-clearance situation (look at the HUUM CLIFF), or if budget is the primary driver (the Drop commands a premium over basic alternatives).
Accessories Worth Considering
HUUM makes a clean range of accessories specifically for the Drop. The most important ones to know about:
Safety railing — Strongly recommended by HUUM, especially if children use the sauna. The railing with wooden arches fits around the stone basket and prevents accidental contact with the hot stone bed. Available in natural and thermo-treated wood finishes.
Embedding flange — Required if you're doing the bench-embedded installation. Covers the cut rim of the bench opening for a clean, finished look.
Drip tray — Catches water runoff from löyly to keep the sauna floor clean and dry. A small detail that makes a real difference in daily use.
UKU controller face options — If the standard Classic Black panel doesn't match your sauna interior, HUUM offers Classic White, Glass (touchscreen), and Wood (thermo-treated ash) face options for the UKU unit. Browse the full HUUM accessories collection for all available options.

Warranty and Support
HUUM backs the Drop with a 5-year limited warranty covering the heater body and components, excluding the heating elements (which are wear items). The heating elements themselves are replaceable and widely available, so element wear at year three or four doesn't mean replacing the whole unit — just the elements.
All HUUM heaters sold through Haven of Heat ship from US-based distribution with full manufacturer warranty support. If you have installation questions, sizing concerns, or need post-purchase technical support, our team handles all of it directly — no overseas support queue.

Final Verdict
The HUUM Drop is the best-designed wall-mounted sauna heater available today. It's the right choice when you want a heater that looks like it belongs in the room — not bolted onto it — and when steam quality, stone mass, and the ability to pour continuously are priorities. The 122-lb stone capacity is genuinely unusual at this price point and size category, and the UKU Wi-Fi system makes the longer heat-up time a scheduling question rather than a real inconvenience.
The updated element retainer and olivine diabase stones address the early reliability concerns that showed up in older production runs, and current models are significantly more dependable than what buyers encountered half a decade ago.
If you're building a sauna and want a heater that does the job beautifully — in every sense of the word — the Drop deserves serious consideration. Shop the HUUM Drop at Haven of Heat and choose heater-only or a complete package with UKU Wi-Fi controller and stones included.
