Narvi NC wood-burning sauna stove in black with large open stone basket

Narvi Wood-Burning Sauna Stoves Review: Kuru vs NC vs Kaamos (2026)

Narvi is one of those names that comes up again and again when people who grew up with Finnish saunas talk about wood-burning stoves. It is not the biggest brand in the U.S. market, and that is part of the appeal: the stoves are simple, heavy, stone-loaded and built in Finland by a company that has been making sauna heat for generations.

In this review we cover who Narvi is, every Narvi model we currently carry, how the Kuru, NC and Kaamos stoves compare, how to size one, what else you need to actually fire it up, and where Narvi fits against electric options. One honest note up front: Narvi makes both electric heaters and wood-burning stoves, but at Haven of Heat our Narvi lineup is currently wood-burning only. We explain the electric side of the line below, but the detailed comparisons focus on the stoves you can actually order from us today.

Who Is Narvi?

Narvi Oy is a Finnish sauna heater manufacturer based in Lappi, in the Rauma area on Finland's west coast. According to the company, it was founded in 1937 by Lake Narvi, which is where the name comes from. Today Narvi builds electric sauna heaters, wood-burning sauna stoves, professional (commercial) heaters, chimneys and flues, sauna stones and fireplace components.

The wood-burning range is where Narvi has the deepest catalog. On its own site Narvi lists the Kaamos, NC, Black, Kuru, Stony, Velvet, Inari, Luosto and Aitokiuas families, plus watertank versions (stoves with an attached water heater) and through-the-wall versions that are fed from an adjacent room. Narvi describes the NC as "hand-made at Rauma, Finland" and the Kaamos as handcrafted in Finland.

That breadth matters less to a U.S. buyer than you might think. What matters is which models are actually available here with U.S. dealer support, and that is the list below.

The Narvi Models We Carry (October 2026)

We currently offer six Narvi wood-burning stoves across three families, plus Narvi's chimney kit:

Prices are approximate at time of writing (October 2026) and can change. You can see the whole lineup on our Narvi collection page.

Narvi Wood-Burning Stoves Compared

Narvi rates its wood stoves by sauna room volume rather than kW output, so that is how we compare them. Specs below come from Narvi's published technical data, converted to U.S. units and rounded.

Model Room volume Stone capacity Stove weight Size (H x W x D) Approx. price
Kuru 14 282-494 cu ft (8-14 m³) ~77 lbs (35 kg) ~108 lbs 26.6" x 16.5" x 18.7" ~$1,775
Kuru 20 353-706 cu ft (10-20 m³) ~88 lbs (40 kg) ~121 lbs 26.6" x 18.1" x 18.7" ~$1,975
NC 16 282-565 cu ft (8-16 m³) ~110 lbs (50 kg) ~159 lbs 30.7" x 19.7" x 22.8" ~$2,275
NC 20 353-706 cu ft (10-20 m³) ~132 lbs (60 kg) ~168 lbs 31.5" x 21.3" x 22.8" ~$2,495
Kaamos 20 353-706 cu ft (10-20 m³) ~132 lbs (60 kg) ~143 lbs 29.9" x 18.9" x 20.1" ~$2,490
NC 24 353-847 cu ft (10-24 m³) ~176 lbs (80 kg) ~181 lbs 32.3" x 22.8" x 22.8" ~$3,275

Every model on this list uses the same 119 mm (about 4.7") flue outlet, has a glass door so you can watch the fire, and sits on adjustable feet. That shared flue size is useful: one chimney kit works across the whole range.

Narvi Kuru 14 and Kuru 20: The Compact, Value Pick

Narvi Kuru wood-burning sauna stove with black steel body and glazed fire door

The Kuru is Narvi's most compact stove in our lineup and the least expensive way into the brand. Narvi describes it as a black-painted steel stove with a glazed door "to enjoy live fire" and wooden handles.

  • Room size: Kuru 14 for 282-494 cu ft; Kuru 20 for 353-706 cu ft
  • Stones: about 77 lbs (Kuru 14) or 88 lbs (Kuru 20)
  • Height: about 26.6", the shortest stove in this group
  • Manufacturer clearances: about 10" at sides and rear, 20" in front, 53" above

Who it's best for: backyard and barrel saunas, cabins, and anyone who wants a real Finnish wood stove at the lowest price in the Narvi family. The Kuru 14 is a natural fit for the small-to-mid rooms most homeowners build.

Honest limitation: the Kuru carries noticeably fewer stones than the NC or Kaamos. Fewer stones means it heats a little quicker but stores less heat, so the steam (löyly) is less forgiving if you throw a lot of water. It also needs more side clearance than the NC.

Narvi NC 16, NC 20 and NC 24: The Heavy-Stone Workhorse

Narvi NC wood-burning sauna stove in black with large open stone basket

The NC is the stove most Narvi fans picture: a tall, square body with a large open stone basket on top and a cast iron door. Narvi says its firebox has "a novel form that ensures more efficient and cleaner combustion," and that the stove meets CE marking requirements.

  • Room size: NC 16 for 282-565 cu ft; NC 20 for 353-706 cu ft; NC 24 for 353-847 cu ft
  • Stones: about 110, 132 and 176 lbs respectively
  • Casing: painted black (Narvi also offers stainless on the NC 16/20; ask us about availability)
  • Manufacturer clearances: about 6" at sides and rear, 20" in front, roughly 47-49" above depending on size

Who it's best for: people who use their sauna often, like long sessions, and want soft, rolling steam. The big stone mass is the whole point of the NC. The NC 24 is one of the larger-capacity wood stoves we sell and suits bigger family saunas and many outdoor builds with lots of glass.

Honest limitation: all those stones take longer to come up to temperature than a lighter stove, and the NC is heavy (roughly 159-181 lbs before stones). Plan the floor and the delivery accordingly.

Narvi Kaamos 20: The Modern Design Choice

Narvi Kaamos 20 wood-burning sauna stove with angular matte black design and glass door

Kaamos means "polar night" in Finnish, and the stove looks the part: angular, matte black and minimal. Narvi lists a cast iron door with a glass window, a painted black casing over corrosion-protected steel, adjustable feet and a rear air circulation design.

  • Room size: 353-706 cu ft
  • Stones: about 132 lbs, the same as the NC 20
  • Footprint: about 18.9" wide x 20.1" deep, slimmer than the NC 20
  • Manufacturer clearances: about 12" at sides, 8" rear, 20" in front, 50" above

Who it's best for: modern saunas where the stove is a visual centerpiece and you want NC-level stone mass in a narrower body. Narvi makes Kaamos 16 and 24 sizes too, but the Kaamos 20 is the one we carry.

Honest limitation: it costs about the same as the NC 20 with the same stone load, so you are mostly paying for the look and slimmer footprint. It also wants more side clearance than the NC.

What About Narvi Electric Heaters?

Narvi does make electric sauna heaters, including professional models, and has recently introduced a heater controller called Narvi Flow. We do not currently carry Narvi electric heaters, so we are not going to quote specs or recommend a specific model here.

If you are leaning electric, the decision usually comes down to convenience versus experience. Electric heats on a timer or app with no fire to tend, but needs a dedicated 240V circuit and an electrician. Wood needs a chimney and someone to stoke it, but works with no power at all and gives that classic fire-and-stone feel. Our guide to electric vs. wood-burning sauna heaters goes deeper, and you can browse our electric sauna heaters from brands like HUUM and Harvia. If you are comparing those two, see Harvia vs HUUM.

How to Size a Narvi Stove

Because Narvi rates its stoves by room volume, sizing starts with simple math: length x width x height of the hot room in feet.

  1. Measure the room volume. A 7' x 6' room with a 7' ceiling is 294 cu ft.
  2. Adjust for "cold" surfaces. Glass doors and windows, uninsulated log walls, stone or tile absorb heat. A common rule of thumb is to treat these as extra volume, which pushes you toward the next size up.
  3. Stay inside the rated range. Try to land in the middle of the range rather than at the top edge. Overloading a small stove to heat a big room means more wood and a hotter firebox.
  4. Check clearances and floor space. Use the manufacturer safety distances above as a starting point, and follow the installation manual that ships with your stove.

For the 294 cu ft example, a Kuru 14 or NC 16 is the right range. Add a large glass front and you would want to look at the Kuru 20, NC 20 or Kaamos 20. Our sauna heater kW calculator and heater sizing chart help you figure out an adjusted room size, and our team is happy to double-check.

What You Need to Operate a Narvi Stove

Narvi Standard Sauna Chimney Kit with insulated chimney section and cap

A chimney

Every wood stove needs a properly installed flue. The Narvi Standard Sauna Chimney Kit is designed for stoves venting straight up through a single-ply, uninsulated wood ceiling, such as a barrel sauna, with a roof pitch of 0-22 degrees. Per our product listing, it includes a 39" uninsulated stainless steel pipe, a 47" insulated section with a built-in damper, a 12" insulated module, rain cap, rubber roof flashing and pass-through hardware, for about 98" overall. It does not include the parts needed to pass through an insulated attic, so conventional framed saunas need a different chimney solution. Its 4.72" inside diameter fits Narvi's 119 mm flue directly, no adapter needed.

Sauna stones

Narvi recommends 10-15 cm (about 4-6") olivine diabase or vulcanite stones. Use the stone capacity in the table as your target, stack them loosely so air can move through, and re-stack or replace crumbling stones periodically. Whether stones ship with your stove can vary, so confirm with us when you order. Our article on the role of sauna rocks explains why this matters so much for steam quality.

Dry, seasoned firewood

Wood stoves have no thermostat or app; you control heat with how much wood you load and how you set the draft. Clean-burning, well-seasoned hardwood makes a big difference. See the best types of wood to burn in a sauna.

Safe installation

Respect the clearances, use a non-combustible floor surface as the manual specifies, plan intake and exhaust ventilation, and check local code and your insurer. If the stove is going inside a house or garage, read our best practices for wood-burning heaters indoors. We can also connect you with installers through our installation partner network.

Narvi Pros and Honest Limitations

Pros

  • Made in Finland by a sauna-focused company with roots going back to 1937
  • Generous stone capacity, especially the NC and Kaamos, for softer, longer-lasting steam
  • Glass doors on every model we carry
  • One 119 mm flue size across the lineup and a matching Narvi chimney kit
  • No electrical service required, which makes these a strong fit for off-grid cabins and remote saunas
  • Competitive pricing for Finnish-built stoves, starting around $1,775

Honest limitations

  • Narvi's manufacturer warranty on wood-burning stoves is 2 years for private use and 1 year for commercial use, shorter than some competitors offer
  • We currently carry only wood-burning Narvi models, no Narvi electric heaters or watertank versions
  • The standard chimney kit only covers uninsulated single-layer ceilings
  • Heavy stoves, and the larger stone loads take longer to heat
  • Like any wood stove: no timer, no app, and someone has to tend the fire

Which Narvi Is Right for You?

  • Small barrel or cabin sauna, tight budget: Kuru 14
  • Mid-size room, best value with real stone mass: NC 16 or NC 20
  • Modern design, narrower footprint: Kaamos 20
  • Larger room or lots of glass: NC 24
  • Want a slightly larger Kuru for a room with some glass: Kuru 20

FAQ

Where are Narvi sauna stoves made?

In Finland. Narvi is based in Lappi in the Rauma area, and the company describes the NC as hand-made in Rauma and the Kaamos as handcrafted in Finland.

What warranty do Narvi wood stoves have?

Narvi's published warranty for wood-burning stoves is 2 years for private (home) use and 1 year for commercial use, starting from the date of purchase. As an authorized dealer, we sell Narvi with the full manufacturer warranty.

Can I use the Narvi chimney kit with a Harvia stove?

Harvia stoves typically use a 115 mm flue, while the Narvi kit's pipe is sized for 119 mm outlets like Narvi and HUUM. Narvi makes an adapter for 115 mm outlets. Contact us before ordering so we can confirm the right setup for your stove and sauna.

How long does a Narvi stove take to heat a sauna?

Narvi does not publish heat-up times, and real-world times depend heavily on room size, insulation, outdoor temperature and wood quality. As a general rule, stoves with more stones (like the NC 24) take longer to come up to temperature but hold heat longer.

Do Narvi stoves need electricity?

No. The wood-burning models need no power at all, which is why they are popular for cabins, outdoor barrel saunas and off-grid builds.

Kuru or NC: which should I pick?

If budget and a small footprint matter most, the Kuru. If you want softer, longer-lasting steam and more thermal mass, the NC is worth the extra few hundred dollars.

Verdict

Narvi makes honest, heavy, Finnish-built wood stoves without a lot of marketing fluff. The NC 20 is the sweet spot of the lineup for most home saunas: generous stone mass, tight clearances and a fair price. The Kuru 14 is the budget-friendly way into a real Finnish stove for small rooms, the Kaamos 20 is the pick when design matters, and the NC 24 handles larger rooms. The tradeoffs are a shorter warranty than some brands and a chimney kit that only covers simple uninsulated ceilings.
