Thermory Aspen Sauna Wood

Thermory Aspen Sauna Wood

Thermo-Aspen Sauna Wood

Thermo-aspen is our best-selling sauna wood — by a significant margin. It's the species most custom sauna builders choose, and for good reason: the thermal modification process transforms ordinary pale aspen into a rich, golden-brown wood with dramatically improved performance in the sauna environment. Lower moisture absorption, greater dimensional stability (less warping, less movement through heat/moisture cycles), and the same no-resin, no-splinter, cool-to-the-touch properties that make natural aspen ideal for saunas. The color is the draw — a warm, honeyed brown that gives any sauna interior a luxurious, modern Scandinavian feel. We carry thermo-aspen from both ProSaunas (individual boards) and Thermory (packaged paneling, prebuilt bench modules, and designer wall profiles).

Wall & Ceiling Cladding — Standard Profiles

ProSaunas thermo-aspen wall cladding comes in tongue-and-groove profiles that interlock for a seamless surface. Three standard gap widths:

1×4 Nickel Gap (WOOD665) — A small flat-bottomed gap between boards creates clean, contemporary lines with subtle shadow definition. Coverage is 3.1" per board. The most popular wall profile across all species and builds.

1×4 Medium Gap (WOOD664) — Wider gap between boards for more defined shadow lines. Same 3.1" coverage. Adds visual rhythm while still looking refined.

2×3 Large Gap (WOOD666) — Dramatic, broad grooves between thicker boards for a bold, sculptural wall surface. Note the larger board dimensions compared to other species' large gap options (2×3 vs. 1×3). Creates a striking accent wall or can be used throughout for maximum visual impact.

Wall & Ceiling Cladding — Thermory Designer Profiles

In addition to standard profiles, we carry Thermory's designer wall paneling systems — pre-packaged in convenient 6-board packs with unique surface geometries that go beyond flat cladding:

Thermory STS4 Nickel Gap — 1×4 (6-Board Pack) — Thermory's version of the classic nickel gap in a convenient pack format. Same refined look, pre-sorted and packaged for efficient installation.

Thermory STS4 Nickel Gap — 1×5 (6-Board Pack) — A wider nickel gap board for a cleaner, more modern wall surface with fewer seams. The wider format is especially effective on large walls and ceilings.

Thermory STEP Large Gap — 5/4×3 (6-Board Pack) — A distinctive stepped profile that creates bold depth and shadow play. More dimensional than standard flat cladding.

Thermory KYTE — 1×4 (6-Board Pack) — A rhythmic, stepped surface pattern that creates visual movement across the wall. An architectural profile that turns your sauna wall into a design feature.

Thermory VIRE — 1×4 (6-Board Pack) — A bold, angular surface profile with sharp geometric lines. The most dramatic of the designer options — makes a strong contemporary statement.

Bench Material

Thermo-aspen bench boards are milled smooth on all sides for a comfortable, splinter-free surface. No tongue-and-groove — boards lay flat across a bench frame with gaps for drainage. Available in individual boards from ProSaunas:

1×3 Bench (WOOD647) — Narrow bench board for tighter spacing and more shadow lines across the bench surface.

1×4 Bench (WOOD648) — Standard width. The most common choice for bench tops and backrests.

5/4×3 Bench (WOOD650) — Extra thickness (5/4" nominal) in a narrow width. Added rigidity with a more substantial feel.

5/4×4 Bench (WOOD651) — The 5/4" thickness in standard width. A strong all-around choice for bench tops that don't flex.

5/4×6 Bench (WOOD649) — Widest bench board. Fewer seams for a cleaner look. The 5/4" thickness ensures no flex in this wider format.

Also available from Thermory: 5/4×4 Bench Material (4-Board Pack) — pre-sorted and packaged for efficient installation.

Prebuilt Bench Modules

For the fastest, most consistent bench installation, Thermory offers prebuilt thermo-aspen bench modules — factory-assembled bench sections that you simply mount to the wall. No measuring individual boards, no calculating gaps, no inconsistencies. These modules are built to professional standards and arrive ready to install:

Prebuilt Bench Module — 63" Long — Shorter module for compact saunas or combining with other modules for custom lengths.

Prebuilt Bench Module — 94.5" Long — Full-length module for standard-size saunas. One module creates a complete bench run in most residential builds.

Prebuilt Bench Corner — L-shaped corner piece that connects two bench modules for a continuous wrapped bench layout. Essential for L-shaped and U-shaped bench configurations.

Prebuilt Backrest — 81" Long — Factory-assembled backrest panel that mounts to the wall behind the bench. Matches the bench modules in color and construction for a cohesive look.

Trim & Molding

Complete your thermo-aspen build with matching trim. All molding is color-matched golden-brown thermo-aspen:

1×1 Square Molding (WOOD684) — General-purpose trim for seams, transitions, and decorative borders.

1×1 Inside Corner Molding (WOOD683) — For inside corners where walls meet each other, the ceiling, or the floor.

1×2 Flat Molding (WOOD682) — Wider trim for wall-to-floor transitions and bench face finishing.

2×2 Right Angle Molding (WOOD685) — L-shaped profile for outside corners, panel ends, and bench edges.

Also from Thermory: Square Molding (10-Board Pack), S1 Molding (4-Board Pack), and T Molding (2-Board Pack) for transition strips between different surfaces.

What Is Thermal Modification?

Thermal modification (also called thermowood treatment) is a process where wood is heated to extremely high temperatures — typically 400–430°F (200–220°C) — in the absence of oxygen for several hours. This permanently changes the wood's cellular structure at a chemical level. The hemicellulose in the wood breaks down, which is what gives the wood its darker color and dramatically reduces its ability to absorb moisture. The result is a material that is fundamentally different from the raw wood it started as: more dimensionally stable, more rot-resistant, and darker in color throughout its entire cross-section (not just a surface treatment — you can sand it and the color is the same all the way through).

For thermo-aspen specifically, the process transforms a very pale, almost white wood into a rich golden-brown. The low thermal conductivity that makes natural aspen comfortable against bare skin is preserved — thermo-aspen still stays cool to the touch at sauna temperatures. The wood retains all of aspen's positive characteristics (no resin, no splinters, hypoallergenic) while gaining improved moisture performance and the striking color change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is thermo-aspen the best seller?

Three factors: color, performance, and versatility. The golden-brown tone is the most universally appealing sauna wood color — warm without being dark, modern without being stark. The thermal modification provides the best moisture resistance and dimensional stability of any untreated natural wood. And the product range is the deepest of any species we carry — from standard boards to designer wall profiles to prebuilt bench modules — so builders can source everything from a single species for a completely cohesive interior.

How do I calculate how much thermo-aspen I need?

Use our Sauna Wood Calculator — enter your room dimensions and it estimates board footage for walls, ceiling, and benches. Wall cladding coverage is 3.1" per 1×4 board. If you're using Thermory 6-board packs, calculate total square footage needed and divide by the coverage per pack listed on each product page.

What's the difference between ProSaunas and Thermory products?

Both use high-quality thermally modified aspen. ProSaunas products are sold as individual boards — you buy exactly how many linear feet you need. Thermory products come in pre-packaged packs (6-board wall packs, 4-board bench packs) and include unique designer profiles (KYTE, VIRE, STEP) and prebuilt bench modules that ProSaunas doesn't offer. The standard profiles (nickel gap, medium gap) are available from both. Choose ProSaunas for maximum flexibility on quantity, choose Thermory for designer profiles and prebuilt solutions.

Can I mix thermo-aspen with other species?

Yes — and it's one of the most popular approaches. Thermo-aspen's golden-brown tone pairs beautifully with lighter woods for contrast: natural aspen (pale cream), alder (light beige), or hemlock (warm white). Common designs include thermo-aspen walls with lighter aspen benches, or lighter walls with thermo-aspen benches as a contrast. All ProSaunas profiles use the same dimensions, so different species interlock and align perfectly.

Does thermo-aspen need to be sealed?

No — the thermal modification process itself provides the protection. Thermo-aspen's reduced moisture absorption means it handles the wet/dry cycles of a sauna without any applied finish. If you want to maintain the fresh look or add extra protection on bench surfaces, a sauna wood oil can be applied. Read more: How to Finish Wood in a Sauna.

How does thermo-aspen compare to cedar?

Thermo-aspen is golden-brown with a subtle, even grain. Cedar is reddish-brown with more pronounced figuring and a strong aromatic scent. Thermo-aspen has better moisture resistance (from thermal modification). Cedar has natural rot-resistance from thujaplicin oils. Both stay cool to the touch. Cedar is the traditional North American choice; thermo-aspen is the contemporary Scandinavian choice. Read the full comparison: Thermowood vs. Cedar for Saunas.
