Dundalk LeisureCraft Georgian cedar cabin sauna compared with SaunaLife outdoor saunas

Dundalk vs SaunaLife: Which Outdoor Sauna Brand Should You Buy? (2026)

Dundalk LeisureCraft and SaunaLife are two of the outdoor sauna brands we get asked about most, and on paper they look close: similar starting prices, barrels and cabins in every size, and kits two people can put together. Look closer, though, and they take different approaches. Dundalk builds in solid Canadian cedar. SaunaLife builds in thermally modified Nordic spruce and includes more features in the box. The right pick depends on your yard, your climate, how you'll get the crate off the truck, and which features you actually care about.

This guide is the head-to-head. If you want a deep dive on one brand, read our Dundalk LeisureCraft saunas review or our SaunaLife saunas review. Here we compare the two side by side and match them up size for size. Prices are as listed in our store at the time of writing (October 2026) and do change.

The quick answer

  • Choose Dundalk if you want real cedar (Eastern White Cedar throughout), a classic Canadian-built cabin or barrel, and you don't mind adding a roof to a barrel or planning for a forklift on the bigger cabins.
  • Choose SaunaLife if you want more included at the base price (shingle roof kit, Wi-Fi LED lighting, contoured thermo-aspen benches), modern cube and glass-front designs, and the widest size range, from a 2-person cube to an 8-person two-room sauna. It is also the only one of the two with a fully pre-assembled option.

Company background

Dundalk LeisureCraft

LeisureCraft says it started in 2004 as a family-owned Canadian manufacturer in Melancthon, Ontario (formerly Dundalk), and that every product is designed, engineered, and built in Canada (leisurecraft.com). The saunas we carry are from its Canadian Timber line and are listed as made to order. That matters for two reasons. Lead times are listed at 3-4 weeks (2-3 weeks for the Avalon). And once you order, it can't be cancelled or returned, because production starts right away.

SaunaLife

SaunaLife describes itself as a company founded by sauna enthusiasts whose saunas are "precision-crafted in Northern Europe" with Nordic partners (saunalife.com). Our listings say the G2 and G4 cabins are designed and crafted in Estonia. Most SaunaLife kits we carry are listed as shipping in 1-2 weeks. The G6 and G11 are listed at 4-10 weeks.

Wood: cedar vs thermally modified spruce

This is the biggest real difference between the two brands. Every Dundalk sauna we carry uses Eastern White Cedar. Cedar has natural resistance to rot and insects, a light color that weathers to silver-gray, and the classic sauna smell many buyers are looking for. Most Dundalk walls are 1.5" solid cedar. The Avalon goes up to 2-3/4" double-groove cedar logs.

SaunaLife mostly uses thermally modified spruce ("Thermo-Spruce"). It's spruce that has been heat-treated to improve its stability and decay resistance. Barrel and cube staves are 1.65" thick, and the benches and backrests are contoured Thermo-Aspen, which stays smooth and comfortable to sit on. The G2 and G4 cabins use untreated Nordic spruce, and SaunaLife recommends finishing the exterior with paint, stain, or a clear coat.

Neither one is the "wrong" choice. Cedar gives you the traditional look and smell. Thermo-wood gives you a darker, more modern look and good dimensional stability. Our thermally modified wood vs cedar comparison goes deeper on the trade-offs.

Shapes and designs

Both brands make the three main outdoor shapes, with a different style:

  • Barrels: Dundalk's Harmony, Serenity, and Tranquility are traditional 7'-diameter cedar barrels with front porches. The MP versions add full-length front glass. SaunaLife's Ergo barrels (E6, E7, E8 and the taller EE6G/EE8G) come with a solid door, a rear window (W), or a glass front (G). Read why barrel saunas aren't popular in Europe before you commit to a barrel. It explains the shape's trade-offs honestly.
  • Cubes and pods: Dundalk has the Luna (a 7' cedar cube) and the MiniPOD. SaunaLife has the most cube options: the CL3G, CL4G, CL5G, and CL7G, all with full glass fronts, plus the CL12GCP with a changing room and the arched-roof G3 pod.
  • Cabins: Dundalk's cabins are traditional gabled designs: Granby, Palmer, Georgian (with porch or changeroom options), and the modern Avalon with 3-tier benches. SaunaLife ranges from the simple G2 and G4 to the modern GL4 and GL6 with integrated porches and recessed exterior LEDs.

Heaters: included or not?

Neither brand includes a heater with the base sauna. You choose one separately, and that's a good thing, because you pick electric, wood, or gas to suit your site. Our listings for both brands recommend similar setups for 2-4 person barrels and small cabins: a 6kW electric heater such as the Harvia KIP or HUUM DROP (25 amps at 240V on a dedicated 35-amp circuit), or a Harvia M3 wood-burning stove kit. Larger rooms step up to 8-9kW.

A few details to note:

  • Some models are listed for electric heaters only, including the Dundalk Luna, Granby, and Palmer and the SaunaLife CL-series cubes (the CL7G also comes in a gas bundle). If you want a wood stove, stick with a model that lists wood-burning heater compatibility.
  • On SaunaLife's EE8G, the flat floor add-on is listed as required for wood-burning stoves.
  • Both brands have a gas bundle with a Scandia 40K BTU heater (natural gas or propane): the Dundalk Georgian gas kit and the SaunaLife CL7G gas kit.

Assembly: how hard is each kit?

Both brands make pre-cut kits for two people with basic tools. SaunaLife lists its Ergo barrels and CL cubes as a 1-day job for 2 people. The G2, G4, GL4, GL6, and G11 are listed at 2 days. Dundalk lists the Granby at 5-8 hours for two people with no cutting. Its other kits come with an installation guide and video.

In practice, barrels and small cubes are the easiest DIY builds for either brand. The big cabins (Georgian, Avalon, G4, GL6) take more care with the roof and framing. If you'd rather hand it off, we can connect you with our installation partner network and electrician database.

The only pre-assembled option between the two brands is the SaunaLife G6. It's a 5-person luxury cabin with 7-1/16" walls and an Alder interior, and it costs about $26,900. It arrives fully built and has to be off-loaded by crane or extended forklift.

Delivery: plan for the truck

Shipping is free curbside on most contiguous U.S. orders, but "curbside" for a 1,000-3,000 lb crate needs a plan. In our store, the following are flagged as not deliverable by liftgate. You'll need a forklift with fork extensions, a tilt-bed truck, or (for some SaunaLife models) a crane:

  • Dundalk: Georgian (all versions, including porch, changeroom, and gas bundles), Tranquility and Tranquility MP, Palmer, and Avalon. The Georgian with changeroom weighs 2,624 lbs and ships in a 144"-long crate.
  • SaunaLife: G6 (pre-assembled), G4, G3, G11 (3,200 lbs), and CL12GCP (3,450 lbs shipping weight).

The smaller barrels and cubes from both brands are not flagged, but they are still heavy. For example, a SaunaLife E7 is 1,213 lbs and a Dundalk Luna is 1,525 lbs. Confirm the unloading plan with us before you order. Your foundation also needs to be ready before delivery day. Our guide on how to level ground for an outdoor sauna walks through the options.

Roofing and climate

For barrels, roofing is a clear difference. Every SaunaLife Ergo barrel includes a black shingle roof kit and stainless steel bands. Dundalk's cedar barrels ship with aluminum bands and no roof covering. A Dundalk asphalt shingle roof (about $390) and a cedar roof extension (about $395) are available as add-ons. In wet or snowy climates we'd budget for the roof.

Dundalk's cabins come with cedar roof boards and a metal shingle roof. The Avalon gets a standing seam metal roof, and the Luna cube uses a waterproof membrane over cedar roof boards. SaunaLife's cabins use self-adhesive roofing (EPDM on the G2, asphalt roll on the G4, roofing felt with metal flashing on the GL series).

Both brands are sold for four-season outdoor use. If you live with heavy snow, prioritize these: a roof covering on any barrel, enough heater power for your room's glass area, and a covered entry. For model-by-model picks for harsh winters, see the best outdoor saunas for cold, snowy climates.

Matchups by size

2-person

  • Dundalk: Granby 2-3 person cabin (about $6,100; 158 cu ft; electric only) or MiniPOD 2-4 person (about $5,900; electric or wood).
  • SaunaLife: CL3G cube (about $4,900; 990 lb shipping weight) or E6 barrel (about $5,300; 137 cu ft).
  • Our take: SaunaLife is the budget winner at this size, and the CL3G fits the tightest spaces. The Granby gives you a true cedar cabin with standing headroom and a metal roof.

4-person

  • Dundalk: Harmony barrel (about $5,950), Serenity barrel with porch (about $6,100), Luna cube (about $7,350), or Palmer cabin (about $7,150).
  • SaunaLife: E7 barrel (about $6,150), G2 cabin (about $5,950), CL5G cube (about $6,950), or the modern GL4 (about $10,450).
  • Our take: Prices are close here. The Harmony vs E7 is the classic matchup. The Harmony is cedar with a porch, but you'll want to add a roof. The E7 includes the roof and lighting. For a cube, the Luna is cedar with a 2-tier bench, and the CL5G has the glass front wall.
SaunaLife Ergo E7G 4-person outdoor barrel sauna with glass front and black shingle roof

6+ person

  • Dundalk: Tranquility barrel (about $6,500), Georgian cabin (about $7,600; 353 cu ft), Georgian with changeroom (about $10,100), or Avalon (about $11,100; 3-tier benches).
  • SaunaLife: E8 barrel (about $6,950), G4 cabin (about $7,950), CL7G cube (about $8,950), CL12GCP with changing room (about $13,000), or the 8-person G11 (about $17,000).
  • Our take: For a big traditional cabin at a fair price, the Dundalk Georgian is hard to beat, and the changeroom version adds a dressing area for about $2,500 more. SaunaLife goes bigger and more modern, with 8-person two-room options Dundalk doesn't match in our lineup.

Warranty

Dundalk saunas are listed with a 5-year warranty. SaunaLife saunas are listed with a lifetime limited warranty. "Limited" matters: coverage terms, exclusions, and what counts as normal wood movement vary, so ask us for the current manufacturer warranty document before you buy if warranty is a deciding factor. As an authorized dealer, we sell both brands with the full manufacturer warranty.

Who each brand is best for

Dundalk LeisureCraft is best for

  • Buyers who specifically want solid cedar inside and out
  • Traditional gabled cabins with metal roofs, especially the Georgian family
  • Buyers who like a Canadian-made, made-to-order product
  • Thicker log-wall construction (Avalon)

Honest limitations: Barrel roofing and lighting cost extra. Orders can't be cancelled once placed. Several larger models need a forklift for delivery. The warranty is shorter on paper.

SaunaLife is best for

  • Buyers who want the most included at the base price (roof kit, Wi-Fi LED lighting, contoured benches)
  • Modern glass-front cubes and barrels
  • Very small spaces (CL3G) or very large groups (G11, CL12GCP)
  • Anyone who wants a fully pre-assembled sauna (G6)
  • Faster listed lead times on most kits

Honest limitations: It isn't cedar, which matters to some buyers. The basic G2 and G4 cabins should get an exterior finish. The CL cubes don't list wood-stove compatibility. The top models are expensive.

FAQ

Is cedar better than thermo-spruce for an outdoor sauna?

Not automatically. Cedar has natural rot resistance and the classic aroma. Thermally modified spruce is heat-treated for stability and decay resistance. Both are used for outdoor saunas. Choose on look, smell, and budget, and maintain the exterior either way.

Do Dundalk or SaunaLife saunas come with a heater?

No. Both are sold without a heater so you can choose electric, wood, or gas. Both brands do offer a gas bundle with a Scandia heater on one model (Dundalk Georgian, SaunaLife CL7G).

Can I get either brand pre-assembled?

In our lineup, only the SaunaLife G6 comes fully assembled. Every Dundalk sauna we carry is a DIY kit, but we can help arrange professional assembly.

Will the delivery truck have a liftgate?

For smaller models, often yes. Several larger models from both brands are not liftgate-eligible and need a forklift with fork extensions, a tilt-bed truck, or a crane. Ask us before you order so you can plan.

Which brand is cheaper?

At the entry level, SaunaLife (the CL3G cube starts around $4,900). In the 4-6 person range the two are within a few hundred dollars of each other. Remember to add a roof to a Dundalk barrel, and a heater for either brand.

Can I use HSA/FSA funds or finance either one?

Qualifying customers may be able to use HSA/FSA funds through Truemed, and both brands are eligible for Shop Pay Installments financing.

Verdict

If the sauna's material is the deciding factor and you want real cedar in a traditional Canadian build, go with Dundalk LeisureCraft. The Georgian and Harmony are our go-to picks. If you care more about what comes in the box, modern design, or sizes at either extreme, SaunaLife usually gives you more for the money. The E7, CL5G, and CL7G are where it shines.
