Estimate the amount of wood needed for your custom sauna project
Custom Sauna Design Service
Get expert help with your sauna project. We'll design your custom sauna, create a materials list, and provide a complete quote.
Planning a sauna project? Use our calculator to estimate the amount of wood you'll need for walls, ceiling, and benches. For more information about custom sauna building, visit our sauna building guide.
1. Interior Dimensions
Enter the interior dimensions of your sauna room in inches. Measure the finished interior space where wood will be installed.
💡 Optimal sauna height for a single level bench is 84" and for a two-level bench is 90".
Non-standard sauna room shapes and rooms larger than 10 ft require a custom quote to ensure accurate material estimates.

Select your bench configuration. This determines how bench materials are calculated.
Custom bench layouts require a personalized quote for accurate material estimates.
Get Your Custom QuoteBench Width Selection
Bench width is measured front-to-back (depth of the sitting/lying surface).
💡 For "L" benches, sketch your bench layout on paper with dimensions to ensure that your requested side bench widths will not encroach on your door opening.
3. Overage
Select an overage percentage to add to your board counts. Overage accounts for cutting waste, defective boards, and installation mistakes.
💡 It is highly recommended to order at least 10% extra to allow for mistakes or boards with defects/blemishes & avoid project delays.

Important Notes
- • Board counts use 3.1" as the coverage width per cladding board (1×4 tongue & groove profile).
- • Board lengths are the next standard size at or above the required span: 47½", 59⅛", 94¾", or 118¼".
- • Benches are constructed with a frame and bench top planks running lengthwise with ½" gaps between slats.
- • Bench board count is the combined total of bench top planks and 3 frame boards per bench.
- • Board counts include a 10% overage allowance as selected in Section 3.
- • Actual material needs may vary based on specific design details and construction methods.
- Double check results before placing your order.

About This Calculator
This calculator provides an estimate of materials needed for your custom sauna project. It calculates the quantity of wood boards required for wall/ceiling cladding, bench construction, and molding based on your specific dimensions and configuration.
How Calculations Work:
Wall & Ceiling Cladding: Each surface is calculated individually — Door Wall, Rear Wall, Left Wall, Right Wall, and Ceiling. Board count = surface span ÷ 3.1" (1×4 T&G coverage width), rounded up. Board length is the next standard size above the span required.
Horizontal cladding: Board count = ceil(Height ÷ 3.1) for all walls. Length rounded up from wall width (Door/Rear) or room depth (Left/Right).
Vertical cladding (or no preference): ceil(Width ÷ 3.1) for Door/Rear; ceil(Depth ÷ 3.1) for Left/Right. All boards use length rounded up from height.
Ceiling: Side-to-side/no preference → ceil(Depth ÷ 3.1), length from Width. Front-to-rear + vertical walls → ceil(Width ÷ 3.1), length from Depth. Front-to-rear + horizontal walls → ceil(Depth ÷ 3.1), length from Depth.
Molding: Corner molding is always 5 boards at 94¾". Baseboard/ceiling trim is 5, 7, or 10 boards depending on room dimensions, at 94¾".
Benches: Top boards = ceil(bench width ÷ 4"). Frame = 3 boards per bench. Board count shown is combined total. 2-Level "L" bench adds 3 bench support boards.
Cost estimates are calculated per linear foot for cladding and bench wood, and per board for moldings, based on your calculated board quantities including overage.
Standard Board Lengths Available:
