An outdoor sauna is not a box that shows up on your porch. A cabin kit can weigh well over a ton, and a pre-assembled sauna can weigh two or three times that. The time to plan how it gets off the truck and into your backyard is before you order, not on the morning the freight carrier calls.
This guide covers how curbside freight works, what a liftgate can and can't handle, when you need a forklift, tilt-bed truck, telehandler or crane, and how to get your site ready. We use real weights and crate sizes from saunas we sell so you can see what you're actually dealing with.
Most outdoor saunas ship by LTL (less-than-truckload) freight. Your crate rides on a semi-trailer or box truck with other shipments, moves between carrier terminals, and then goes out on a local delivery truck. Free shipping on most contiguous U.S. orders means curbside freight delivery, and it's worth knowing exactly what that includes.
For a step-by-step walkthrough of the delivery day itself, see our guide on how to take delivery of your online-purchased sauna.
A liftgate is a powered platform on the back of the delivery truck that lowers a pallet from the trailer bed to the ground. It's great for hot tubs, indoor infrared saunas, heaters and smaller crates. For many outdoor saunas, it simply doesn't apply.
Liftgate limits vary by carrier and by the specific truck, but as a rough guide:
Treat those numbers as approximate. The carrier assigned to your order makes the final call. That's why many of our outdoor sauna listings are marked as not eligible for liftgate delivery: the crate is too long, too heavy, or both.
Here's what some popular models actually ship as, taken from the product listings. Crated kits are long and heavy but can be unpacked at the curb. Pre-assembled saunas arrive as one finished building.
Notice the pattern. Even the smallest pre-assembled unit on this list weighs more than a typical liftgate is built for, and the larger ones are in the 4,000-5,800 lb range. Plan for machinery.
| Delivery type | What it is | Typical use | What you need to arrange |
|---|---|---|---|
| Curbside freight | Carrier drops the shipment at the curb or end of driveway | Standard for all large saunas | Be present, inspect and sign; have an unloading plan |
| Liftgate | Truck platform lowers the pallet to the ground | Indoor saunas, heaters, cold plunges, smaller crates | Confirm eligibility; flat paved drop spot |
| Hand offloading | Unpacking the crate on the truck and carrying parts off | Some crated kits, only if the carrier allows it | 3-4 helpers, gloves, a clear staging area; ask the carrier first |
| Forklift with fork extensions | Forklift with longer forks to support long crates | Long crated kits; some pre-assembled units | Rental (often rough-terrain), operator, delivery of the machine |
| Tilt-bed truck | Rollback or tilt-bed that slides freight off at an angle | Moving a crate from the curb closer to the site | Rental or towing/hauling company; transfer from the freight truck |
| Telehandler | Rough-terrain lift with a telescoping boom | Reaching over obstacles or across soft yards | Rental with operator, or an equipment contractor |
| Crane | Mobile crane lifting the unit over the house or fence | Heavy pre-assembled saunas, tight or fenced backyards | Crane service or rigger, lift plan, street access, possible permit |
This is the most common answer for crated outdoor kits. Long crates need forks long enough to support them across their length, which is why listings specify fork extensions. A standard warehouse forklift won't work on grass or gravel, so most homeowners rent a rough-terrain forklift. For pre-assembled units, the listings call for an extended or large forklift because of both weight and size.
Some buyers rent a tilt-bed (rollback) truck or hire a local hauling company. The crate is moved onto the tilt-bed and then slid off near your site. This works well when the build site is close to a driveway, and the Dundalk Georgian listing names it as an option.
A telehandler has a boom that can reach forward and up. It's useful when the sauna has to clear a retaining wall, a garden bed or a short fence, or when the yard is too soft for a forklift.
For the heaviest pre-assembled saunas, or any sauna that has to go over a house, garage or tall fence, a crane is often the cleanest option. The crane sets up in the street or driveway, lifts the unit off the truck, and sets it directly on the foundation. One lift, no dragging across the lawn.
If you have equipment experience, renting a rough-terrain forklift or telehandler from a local rental yard is often the cheapest route. If you don't, hire someone. A rigging company, crane service or local excavation or landscaping contractor can bring the machine and an operator, plan the lift, and carry the insurance. On a sauna that costs as much as a car, paying a pro to place it is cheap insurance.
Walk the route from the street to the sauna site with a tape measure. Check:
The bill of lading (BOL) is the delivery receipt. Signing it "clean" tells the carrier everything arrived in good shape, and that makes any later damage claim much harder.
The nice thing about a crated kit: once it's on the ground, it doesn't have to move as one heavy object. You can unpack it at the curb or in the driveway and carry wall boards, staves, benches and roof parts back by hand or on a dolly or garden cart.
Pre-assembled saunas don't have this option. Whatever equipment lifts the unit off the truck usually has to carry it to the foundation too, which is why access and lift planning matter so much more for them.
Many kits are designed for two handy people to assemble in one or two days. If you'd rather not, our installation network page connects you with partner assemblers and electricians. For budgeting, see our breakdown of the typical cost to have a sauna installed.
A crated kit is best for backyards with limited access, buyers who want to avoid crane costs, and anyone comfortable with a weekend build. You still need to get the crate off the truck, but after that you can move it in pieces.
A pre-assembled sauna is best for buyers with open access to the site (or budget for a crane) who want a finished, factory-built sauna with no assembly. See our guide to the best prebuilt saunas or browse the pre-assembled saunas collection.
No. Standard freight delivery is curbside, meaning the curb or the end of your driveway. The driver won't move the crate into your yard, unpack it or help with assembly. Plan your own equipment and helpers for the last stretch.
Someone needs to be there to sign the bill of lading, inspect the shipment and handle offloading. If you can't make it, send a trusted person who knows the plan and how to note damage, or reschedule with the carrier during the appointment call. Unattended freight usually isn't left behind, and repeated missed appointments can lead to redelivery or storage fees.
Photograph it before unloading, write the specific damage on the bill of lading before you sign, and contact us that day. Small crate damage often doesn't mean the contents are damaged, but noting it protects you if something inside turns out broken.
Refusing is a last resort for severe, obvious damage. Before you refuse, call or text us so we can coordinate with the manufacturer and carrier. Refused freight goes back to the terminal and can mean return freight costs and long delays, and some saunas (like Dundalk's made-to-order models) can't be canceled once ordered. In most cases, noting the damage and accepting the shipment is the faster route to a fix.
It varies a lot by region, crane size, reach and how long the job takes. As a very rough guide, a residential sauna lift with a small mobile crane and operator often runs somewhere in the high hundreds to a few thousand dollars, usually with a minimum charge of a few hours. Lifts over a house, long reaches or street permits push the price up. Get quotes from two or three local crane or rigging companies before you order.
Rough-terrain forklift and telehandler rental prices vary by region and machine size, and delivery and pickup fees from the rental yard add to the total. Call your local rental yard with the crate weight and dimensions from the product page and they'll tell you which machine fits and what it costs.
Delivery is the part of buying an outdoor sauna most people forget to plan. Check the weight and crate size on the product page, figure out how it gets off the truck and to the site, build your foundation first, and be there to inspect before you sign. Crated kits give you more flexibility because they can move piece by piece; pre-assembled saunas save you assembly time but need a large forklift or crane.
